Yuan Dynasty Blue-and-White Stem Bowl
h 10.4 cm

This stem bowl is painted using imported cobalt material, with visible iron-rust spots. The glaze is bluish-white in color, bright and lustrous. The decoration is simple and lively, with the blue-and-white hues appearing subtle and elegant. Used as a wine vessel during the Yuan Dynasty, it was deeply favored by the Mongols and often served to esteemed guests. Due to its large capacity, it facilitated hearty drinking and was treasured by the Mongols as a precious object.

It features a flared mouth, curved walls, a deep belly, and a tall, hollow stem. The stem is adorned with three raised bow-string patterns, with the foot rim flat-cut to expose the unglazed body, and the base slightly flared. The exterior of the bowl is painted with a blue-and-white dragon motif, vividly depicted with round, glaring eyes and sharp claws, soaring amidst colorful clouds—lively and dynamic, with cloud patterns complemented by flame motifs. The interior rim is decorated with scrolling vine patterns, while the center of the bowl is painted with elegant, flowing flame motifs.
