Qing Dynasty Famille Rose with Enamel Double-Elephant-Ear Vase with Double-Bat Design
Height: 24.4 cm
Mouth Diameter: 5.8 cm
Foot Diameter: 7.4 cm
This vase features a straight mouth, a long neck, a sloping shoulder, and a rounded belly tapering downward, supported by a ring foot. The interior of the foot is fully glazed, produced using a pad-firing technique. The rim is adorned with a circle of gold-water decoration. On both sides of the neck, elephant ears are sculpted in relief, coated with red glaze, with curled trunks, creating a vivid design. The body of the vase is decorated with overglaze motifs of double bats, longevity peaches, and intertwining peony branches.
The elephant symbolizes strength and steadfastness; the bats are a homophone for 'fu' (福), representing happiness and fulfillment; the peaches signify longevity; and the peonies symbolize wealth and prosperity. The peony design is exquisitely realistic, showcasing elegance and grandeur, enhancing both visual appeal and artistic value. With their masterful craftsmanship and ingenious conception, the ancients imbued this vase with the auspicious meaning of 'double blessings of happiness and longevity, as well as good fortune and prosperity,' while also offering collectors artistic value and aesthetic enjoyment.
