Large Lang Kiln Red Glaze Plate from the Kangxi Reign of the Qing Dynasty (Marked "Made in the Great Qing Kangxi Era")
Height: 4.8 cm
Mouth Diameter: 22.6 cm
Foot Diameter: 13.8 cm
This is a large Lang Kiln red plate fired in an imperial kiln. The plate features a flared mouth, curved walls, a shallow body, and a ring foot with white glaze on the interior. The white glaze bears an underglaze blue six-character regular script mark reading "Made in the Great Qing Kangxi Era," applied using the underglaze blue technique and fired on supports. The vibrant red glaze is strikingly bright, resembling the deep crimson of freshly coagulated ox blood, with a strong glass-like luster.
The plate showcases the unique Lang Kiln technique of "receding glaze at the rim, pooling but not dripping at the foot." Due to the high-temperature flow of the glaze, the mouth rim reveals a white body where the glaze thins, forming a white spiral line known as the "rush edge." The lower part of the plate darkens gradually in glaze color, while the body remains pure white, fine-textured, and hard as jade. The exposed foot shows slight "firestone red" marks, with the foot itself displaying a refined beige hue and meticulous trimming.
Lang Kiln red was pioneered by Lang Tingji, the governor of Jiangxi, who elevated high-temperature copper-red glaze techniques to the pinnacle of Qing porcelain craftsmanship through innovation. Lang Kiln red is the only glaze named after a kiln supervisor, Lang Tingji, and is hailed as the "crown of all reds." Due to its rarity and high value, this elegant and dignified large Lang Kiln red plate is both scarce and expensive, securing its status as an aristocratic treasure among porcelain.
This large Lang Kiln red-glazed plate not only demonstrates the exquisite craftsmanship of Kangxi-period imperial kiln porcelain but also stands as a prized collectible due to its unique technique and precious glaze color.
